Effective Communication Skills Training – Course Outline

Understanding communication barriers
Like most things in life, communication is far more complicated than it seems. Identifying and exploring some of the common communication barriers can help you reduce their impact on your communication with others.

Paraverbal and non-verbal communication
Much of a message is not in the words used. In this module we consider how to control and enhance non-verbal signals as well as how to read those signals from other people.

Listening and questioning
Listening is harder than we think, but it is a powerful tool in communicating effectively and building relationships with others. In this module we focus on listening and also on the art of questioning – fundamental parts of active listening if we truly want to understand others’ communication.

Mastering the art of conversation
Engaging in interesting, memorable small talk is a valuable skill, yet it’s daunting for most people. How do you know what to share and when to share it? How do you know what topics to avoid? How do you become someone that others find interesting to talk to? In this module we focus on these questions and practise how to be a good conversationalist.

Emotional intelligence
Your emotional intelligence (EI) is a part of you that affects every aspect of your life. In this module we focus on understanding the root causes of your emotions and how to use them, and the triggers of others’ emotions and how to handle them, so that you can interact effectively with others.
